The filmmaker made a short film called The Dirk Diggler Story, which is based on real-life adult film actor John Holmes, whose life is chronicled in the 1981 documentary Exhausted: John C. Holmes, The Real Story. Nearly a decade later, Paul Thomas Anderson increased his net worth and began production on Boogie Nights after releasing his 1996 feature directorial debut, Hard Eight.
