At today’s Nacon Direct, fans were treated to some new footage for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, that included the return of some familiar faces.
More news has been revealed about the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: Gollum video game at the recent Nacon Connect that sees the return of some familiar faces to Middle-earth. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was first announced in 2019, with a release date set for 2021. However, in order to ensure that it delivers a game that is up to the high standard fans are already anticipating, developer Daedalic Entertainment, along with its new partner Nacon, pushed the release date for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum back to an unspecified date in 2022.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has already generated a lot of interest from fans of Tolkien’s Middle Earth, despite featuring an unlikely character as its lead. In a change to other games set in these fantasy and orc riddled lands, such as Shadow of Mordor, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will focus less on brutal violence and more on Gollum’s character and his skills at parkour. This will include the introduction of a split personality mechanic, to account for Gollum and Sméagol focused conflicts. It will also be taking more inspiration from Tolkien’s original text, rather than the cultural phenomenon of Peter Jackson’s movie adaptations of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
And yet, despite the enthusiasm and curiosity already surrounding the game, there has not been that much actual footage shared for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, save for some moody shots inside Mordor and a small snippet of stealthy gameplay. However, this changed at the recent Nacon Connect. Expectant fans were treated to some brand-new information and footage entitled “A Unique Promise” for the upcoming title, during an interview with Harald Riegler, Producer of Daedalic Entertainment. This new footage showed off more of the world that Gollum will be sneaking his way through, as the story of the “Precious” ring is told from his unique perspective. Perhaps most excitingly, fans were also given their first glimpse of some more of the characters that are going to be met in Middle Earth, including Gandalf, Thranduil the Elvenking, and the Mouth of Sauron.
This latest reveal clearly shows that, while this world is one that fans already know and love, be it through the books, movies or other video game adaptations, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be putting its own stamp firmly on Middle Earth. The lands that players will be exploring on the game’s release will be both familiar and new at the same time. This will also be the first time that fans of Tolkien’s works will be able to experience a game in his world with the latest generation of console hardware, with the PS5 DualSense controller already rumored to be using haptic feedback to inform players of Gollum’s stamina levels.
This new footage for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is an exciting development for Tolkien fans. While a firm release date is yet to be announced, it is likely that more news will be revealed soon, as Nacon and Daedalic Entertainment begin to ramp up their promotions for this next adventure into the depths of Middle Earth.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will come to Nintendo Switch, PC via Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms in 2022.
