Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird” and “Little Women” filmmaker Greta Gerwig has officially signed on to direct the “Barbie” movie at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Gerwig signed on to co-write the movie’s script with Noah Baumbach back in 2019. She’s been rumored to potentially direct since then, but the deal wasn’t officially set – until now.
The film’s star and producer Margo Robbie revealed Gerwig’s hiring to British Vogue this month and the trades have subsequently confirmed it.
In the same interview, the “Birds of Prey” star says the Barbie film: “comes with a lot of baggage and a lot of nostalgic connections.” She goes on to say:
“With that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t.”
Filming on the project aims to kick off in the UK next year.
