MCU architect Kevin Feige breaks down what has happened in Phase 4 thus far with WandaVision, Falcon & Winter Soldier, Loki, and Black Widow.
MCU architect Kevin Feige breaks down Phase 4’s movies and TV shows thus far. Marvel Studios was forced to delay kicking things off with its new stories after wrapping up the Infinity Saga due to the pandemic. But, now that it is back with a string of projects out and several more in the pipeline, Feige looks back on how this fresh chapter is shaping up for the franchise.
Kicking off and building the MCU to what it is today hasn’t been easy for Marvel Studios. Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man was a massive risk. Aside from the fact that Downey was still burdened by his personal struggles in the past years, there also wasn’t a complete script. Instead, there was a general trajectory for the film’s narrative, but the rest of it was decided during production. The success of the 2008 film laid out the foundation for the franchise, with 24 films and three shows in its portfolio.
As the MCU reinvents itself, Feige sits down with Rotten Tomatoes to discuss the transition from wrapping up the Infinity Saga into starting this new overall chapter for the universe. In the clip, the Marvel Studios boss breaks down their approach coming into Phase 4, including the idea of introducing fresh players in the universe who have quickly become fan-favorites such as WandaVision‘s Agnes/Agatha Harkness, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s John Walker, and Loki‘s Agent Mobius M. Mobius.
While established characters have fronted Marvel Studios’ exclusive content for Disney+, these projects have also been utilized to debut new characters, as mentioned by Feige. While the MCU is known for its secrecy and there is no official confirmation yet when those players will pop up in the universe, it’s safe to say that the producer’s comments are a clear indication that they are set to appear in future projects. One character he didn’t mention is Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, who is introduced in Black Widow. Nat’s younger “sister” is set to be involved in the upcoming Hawkeye show and beyond, based on the post-credits scene in Cate Shortland’s film. Understandably, however, it seems like this clip with Feige was filmed a couple of weeks ago before Black Widow was released in both theaters and Disney+.
Marvel Studios still has a stacked slate for the rest of the year. Aside from more TV shows such as the animated series, What If…?, it is also scheduled to continue releasing films in theaters again. After Black Widow, there are still three more movies in the docket just for this year alone with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. From there, the MCU will continue to have a stacked slate for the next several years with no signs of slowing down.
