Following their success with “Army of the Dead,” Netflix is very much staying in the Zack Snyder business as he has set his next project, the epic sci-fi fantasy “Rebel Moon,” at the streamer.
The story begins when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius.
Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighbouring planets to help them make a stand.
Snyder is co-writing the script with Shay Hatten (“Army of the Dead”) and Kurt Johnstad (“300”). He will produce with his regular producing partners Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller along with his “Dawn of the Dead” remake producer Eric Newman.
‘Rebel’ was reportedly born from a “Star Wars” pitch the filmmaker had developed a decade ago, dubbed a “more mature” take on that universe that never went beyond the discussion stage. At one point they considered it as a series but decided a feature is where its true potential was and have spent several years so far building out the world and crafting it with that approach.
Snyder tells the trade: “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”
The feature is Snyder’s next movie with production aiming to begin early 2022.
