Redford Martin To Produce Dark Winds

AMC has handed out a six-episode series order for “Dark Winds,” an ambitious new psychological crime thriller series based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee books and with some big names attached.

The books followed two Navajo police officers in the 1970s Southwest United States. The first season of the series will follow the officers’ search for clues in a grisly double murder case that forces them to challenge their own spiritual beliefs and come to terms with the trauma of their pasts.

Actor/filmmaker Robert Redford and “Game of Thrones” creator George R.R. Martin have both boarded the project as executive producers alongside Tina Elmo, Vince Gerardis and “Smoke Signals” director Chris Eyre who will also helm the pilot.

Vince Calandra (“Castle Rock{) serves as showrunner on the series which was created by Graham Roland (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”) and stars “Fargo” actor Zahn McClarnon. All three will executive produce as well. Also on board is former “Twilight” actor Kiowa Gordon.

The production has also secured very rarely granted permission to film on tribal lands in New Mexico. The writers’ room was staffed entirely by Native American writers with plenty of Native American cast and crew involved. The project also reportedly has the full support and blessing of The Navajo Nation.

The first season is expected to premiere on AMC in 2022.
