The PS5 exclusive “Returnal” has scored some of the best reviews of any game this year so far.
So it comes as little surprise that Sony has just acquired the game’s Finnish developer Housemarque which is now the newest member of PlayStation Studios. The developer also created the acclaimed “Super Stardust” and “Dead Nation” titles.
Housemarque’s co-founder and managing director Ilari Kuittinen says in a statement: “This gives our studio a clear future and a stable opportunity to continue delivering on gameplay centric approaches, while still experimenting with new methods of narrative delivery and pushing the boundaries of this modern artform.”
The announcement however may have given the game away on another acquisition according to IGN. PlayStation Japan reportedly announced the takeover of Housemarque in a tweet with a specially created image indicating they may have also acquired Bluepoint Games. Said tweet has since been deleted.
Should it end up being true, it makes plenty of sense. The America-based Bluepoint Games was founded in 2006 and has been known for its celebrated remasters and remakes of classic older titles.
They did the “Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection” and “Gravity Rush” remasters for PS4, the remake of “Shadow of the Colossus” for PS4, the “God of War” collection and “Metal Gear Solid HD Collection” remasters for PS3, and most recently did the remake of “Demon’s Souls” for PS5.
In any case, Sony has yet to confirm or deny the news and such an acquisition is speculation for now until confirmed by either the developer or the studio.
