The trailer for Netflix’s The Kissing Booth 3 shows one last summer of fun at the beach – and hints at a tough decision ahead for Joey King’s Elle.
A new trailer for Netflix’s The Kissing Booth 3 teases main character Elle’s toughest choice yet. Based on the still-unreleased third book in The Kissing Booth series by Wattpad star author, Beth Reekles, The Kissing Booth 3 will be the final installment in Vince Marcello’s romantic comedy trilogy that started with The Kissing Booth in 2018 and continued with The Kissing Booth 2 in 2020. Though they received mediocre reviews from critics, The Kissing Booth movies were massive hits for Netflix, and heralded a new era of teen content for the streaming giant. Many fans feel that The Kissing Booth 2 was better than the original.
The series follows high schooler Elle (Joey King), who must balance her relationships with best friend Lee (Joel Courtney) and bad-boy-turned-boyfriend Noah (Jacob Elordi). Making it more complicated is the fact that Lee and Noah are brothers with very different personalities. The first film sees Elle hide her fledgling relationship with Noah from Lee, leading to conflict when he eventually discovers the truth. It ends happily, though, and Elle and Noah are still together in The Kissing Booth 2, by which time Noah is a freshman at Harvard. Adjusting to a long-distance relationship proves difficult, especially with the addition of cute new transfer student Marco (Taylor Zakhar Perez). Elle is also dealing with college applications, and the film ends on a cliffhanger – will Elle decide to go to Harvard with Noah, or U.C. Berkeley with Lee, like they’d always planned?
Today, Netflix released a trailer for The Kissing Booth 3 that sheds some light on what happens next. The trailer shows Elle, Noah, Lee, and Lee’s girlfriend Rachel (Meganne Young) gearing up to spend one last summer at the boys’ family beach house, though why it’s their last summer there is unclear. Parties, summer jobs, and a “Beach Bucket List” with Lee are keeping Elle busy, but her looming decision about which school to choose – and which Flynn boy to disappoint – can’t be ignored. Check it out below:
Fans will be excited to see the return of Perez as Marco, as well as Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Chloe. And of course Molly Ringwald is back as Noah and Lee’s mother, Mrs. Flynn. In the trailer, she dispenses some solid advice to Elle: “Maybe your choices have more to do with what other people want? Maybe it’s time that you think about what you want.” Hopefully, Elle will listen to her.
One of the main criticisms of The Kissing Booth films thus far is that, despite being billed as a coming-of-age story, Elle hasn’t done much maturing. Her communication skills need work, and she needs to start focusing more on herself and her own future. Elle will never discover who she’s meant to be if she keeps worrying about what Lee and Noah will think. The trailer indicates that Elle is starting to figure this out, and if she is able to take a step back from what she feels she owes the Flynn boys, and instead focus on what she owes herself, The Kissing Booth 3 will be a worthy ending to the trilogy.
