What We Do in the Shadows and Wellington Paranormal creators Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement are developing a new action-adventure comedy show.
What We Do in the Shadows creators Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi are developing a new action-adventure series. Waititi and Clement’s hit 2014 mockumentary film What We Do in the Shadows centers around a group of vampires living together in modern-day New Zealand. What began as a cult classic, the supernatural comedy film has earned a larger following, inspiring the TV show What We Do in the Shadows that is airing season 3 later this year. Its first spinoff show, Wellington Paranormal, is a New Zealand mockumentary horror-comedy series. The series premiered in 2018 and wrapped up its third season earlier this year before it will debut in the U.S. on The CW in July.
Now the creative duo have another series in the works. EW reports that Waititi and Clement are developing an action-adventure comedy series that is unlike what they have done in the past. Read what Clement had to say about the new show below:
Taika and I are working on a new series right now which we just started writing. I can’t tell you much about it yet, but what’s fun about it and what makes it exciting for me is it’s something I always wanted to do which is long-form episodes in a sitcom. It’s an action-adventure comedy. It’ll be different from what I’ve usually done. I’ve made three sitcoms now, and I hope this one is still funny but more of an adventure series.
Clement also said that with the focus on a new series, the future of the What We Do in the Shadows franchise is uncertain, saying “we’re pausing” on Wellington Paranormal. Wellington Paranormal stars Karen O’Leary and Mike Minogue (who reprise their roles from What We Do in the Shadows) as police officers in the paranormal unit. The show follows the unit as they investigate supernatural occurrences in Wellington. Similar to What We Do in the Shadows, Wellington Paranormal is a mockumentary-style comedy and shares the distinct dry humor of the film.
What We Do in the Shadows, which will premiere its third season on FX in September, and Wellington Paranormal are both beloved for their absurd and dry mockumentary-style humor. Though Clement says that the new series will be different from what he usually does, fans can likely expect the same hilarious writing. While the other two shows deal with more supernatural themes, it will be interesting to see what an action-adventure show will be like.
