Loki episode 4 introduces a handful of new God of Mischief variants, including “Boastful Loki,” a version that undeniably resembles the MCU’s Thor.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Loki episode 4, “The Nexus Event.”
Loki episode 4, “The Nexus Event,” gives a glimpse of what would have happened if the God of Mischief was the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor with a look at “Boastful Loki.” The enticing figure, played by DeObia Oparei, is just one of four Loki variants featured in episode 4’s credits scene. While each one has a significance, Boastful Loki has an undeniable connection to the MCU’s God of Thunder.
Tom Hiddleston’s Loki in focus is saved from the destruction of Lamentis-1 by the Time Variance Authority along with Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) early in episode 4. It turns out, Loki’s romantic feelings toward Sylvie created a Nexus Event that tipped off the TVA. The pair is then forced into separate interrogations, which results in Agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) in learning the truth regarding TVA employees being variants. Loki and Sylvie get a chance to confront the Time-Keepers before finding the trio located at the TVA headquarters are androids. Shortly after this disheartening discovery, villainous Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) uses a staff to “prune” Loki.

Though Loki is seemingly wiped from existence with the use of the TVA tool, he is very much alive. The Loki episode 4 credits scene shows the God of Mischief awakens in what looks to be apocalyptic New York City. As he begins questioning his situation, he finds multiple figures standing over him, offering to help. The present characters–Old Loki (Richard E. Grant), Kid Loki (Jack Veal), Crocodile Loki, and Boastful Loki–are all Loki variants who the TVA presumably exiled at some point. While each version is drastically different, Boastful Loki is especially interesting since he gives viewers an idea of what Loki would have turned out to be had he lived Thor’s life. Not only does he carry Thor’s signature bravado, but he’s also equipped with his own Mjolnir variant.
With only a quick glimpse, it’s impossible to understand the background of Boastful Loki. However, the name alone connects to Thor’s ostentatious attitude when the God of Thunder still had his sights set on the Asgardian throne. Perhaps this Loki was actually born in Thor’s place, causing a Nexus Event, putting him on the radar of the TVA, or maybe he ascended to the throne by his own power. Either way, Boastful Loki seemingly took his brother’s role, taking the notion of “what if” to an entirely new level within the MCU.
As for the appearance, Boastful Loki dons furs resembling those worn by figures in Norse mythology, which heavily links to Thor’s background, but the character is holding a hammer of all things. Before acquiring Stormbreaker, the primary Thor’s weapon of choice was his enchanted hammer, Mjolnir. Though Boastful Loki’s hammer is modified with a wrench-like handle and a gold-plated head, Mjolnir was clearly an inspiration. Maybe this Loki forged his weapon in honor of his brother, or that path became his destiny for taking over Thor’s place in Boastful Loki’s timeline.
Either way, the remaining episodes of Loki will surely provide more insight into the Loki variants, including the Thor-like Loki. The MCU could also throw in a curveball by connecting the variant to an established comic book character in the way Sylvie was linked to Enchantress. Boastful Loki is already drawing comparisons to another known powerful Asgardian in the comics named Sigurd. If Loki isn’t setting up any major surprise, the Disney+ series could at least give Boastful Loki some key screentime. Forming a character with a blend of Loki and Thor is certainly not an event to gloss over quickly.
